Are Christians Expected to Observe the Sabbath?

Ten Commandments“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.” (Exodus 20:8)

SUNDAY OR SATURDAY WORSHIP?

The sabbath.

For some people it’s a big issue whether a Christian rests/worships on Sunday or he rests/worships on Saturday.

And when you consider that keeping the sabbath day holy is one of the Ten Commandments and, also, that the sabbath day to Jews really is Saturday (starting at sundown on Friday), you can understand why some people feel the way they do.

(I’m talking about those who believe Saturday is the day for rest/worship.)

But it’s a misplaced feeling.

And I’m going to tell you why as best I can in a brief blog post.

(I really could/should devote a whole sermon to this!)

3 REASONS WHY A CHRISTIAN WORSHIPS ON SUNDAY

Here now are three of the reasons why a Christian rests/worships on Sunday as opposed to on Saturday (reference: Walter Martin’s “The Kingdom of The Cults)…

1. Christ rose on Sunday.

And from the early days of the church, in commemoration of that wonderful event, believers have worshiped on the first day of the week rather than on the seventh (Saturday). The “Church Fathers” in their writings testify to this.

2. Paul said the sabbath day was no longer an issue.

“Therefore let no one act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day – things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ.” (Colossians 2:16-17)

The sabbath day is fulfilled in Jesus.

Christ is the “rest” for the believer.

Christians are therefore freed from legalism as regards the sabbath requirement.

3. Paul said Christians are no longer “under the law.”

“But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how is it that you turn back again to the weak and worthless elemental things (the law), to which you desire to be enslaved all over again? You observe days and months and seasons and years. I fear for you, that perhaps I have labored over you in vain.” (Galatians 4:9-11)
