10 Mistakes People Make with Motives (plus 1 bonus)

Lady JusticeLightning fast read meant to make you think…

10 Mistakes People Make with Motives (plus 1 bonus):

1. Aren’t clear on what a motive really is (“something that causes a person to act in a certain way, do a certain thing, etc.; incentive”).

2. Think they can know everybody else’s motives (only God is omniscient). (1 Corinthians 4:5)

3. Think it is impossible to determine another person’s motives (so why even try). (Matthew 9:4; 1 Corinthians 12:10)

4. Forget that God can not help but know every motive. (Hebrews 4:13)

5. Forget that God judges and will judge every motive (the “why” behind what you do). (1 Samuel 16:7; Hebrews 9:27)

6. Overlook that motives can be faked (hypocrisy, “pretense“) on the outside (a form of lying). (Mark 12:40)

7. Don’t realize that the best motives a believer will ever have will still be tainted (though made acceptable through Christ). (Proverbs 16:2; Matthew 5:8; 1 Corinthians 10:31; Romans 7:18-19)

8. Don’t realize that even Christians are not immune to having wrong motives. (James 4:3)

9. Overlook that harboring a false motive is sin.

10. Are ignorant of the fact that God’s motives are always good (wholesome) and pure. (Luke 18:19)

BONUS Embrace a “look at me” (prideful) attitude as their motive in much of what they do (e.g. especially true for Hollywood actors and politicians – and some preachers, too). (Philippians 1:17)
