An Attitude of Worship

“And David was dancing (twirling around and leaping) before the Lord with all his might, and David was wearing a linen ephod.” (2 Samuel 6:14)

I want to talk to you about worship. It’s really what the verse above is all about along with it’s surrounding context. (2 Samuel 6:12-16; 20-23) In this passage we discover two contrasting “attitudes” towards worship. One is King David’s. The other is his wife, Michal’s. (2 Samuel 6:20)

The dictionary defines “attitude” as: “a state of mind or feeling with regard to some matter; [it’s a] disposition.”

According to 2 Samuel 6 David’s state of mind/feeling/disposition towards worship is a godly one we should adopt. On the other hand, his wife, Michal’s state of mind/feeling/disposition towards worship is ungodly, earthly, hostile, wicked (just like her father, Saul’s, by the way). We should avoid/dispel/run from Michal’s attitude.

With this in mind, I’d like to offer you seven points regarding an attitude of worship (and as they were tweeted in a recent teaching on Twitter). May they help to keep you on track in your love for Jesus and personal/corporate worship experience…

An Attitude of Worship:
(feel free to tweet these yourself!)

1. Worship begins w/gladness of heart. “David went & brought up the ark of God…w/gladness.” 2Sam6:12b \o/ #ahfg

2. Worship is where we demonstrate r value of God no matter what it costs us. ~David is willing to part w/possessions. 2Sam6:13 #ahfg

3. Worship requires r own personal involvement. ~David personally sacrifices “ox & fatling.” (He is dancing, too!) 2Sam6:13-14 \o/ #ahfg

4. Worship is not to be done half-heartedly. “And David was dancing before the Lord with all his might.” 2Sam6:14a Hold nothing back #ahfg

5. Worship is not about looking “spiritual.” David’s “wearing a linen ephod.” 2Sam6:14b He lays aside his royal robes so he blends in #ahfg

6. Worship can b embarrassing.“& [Michal] despised [David]in her heart.”2Sam6:20 Her husband has made a fool of himself in dance&dress #ahfg

7. Worship is the doorway to a fruitful life.“Michal…had no child 2 the day of her death.”2Sam6:23 David’s wife suffers 4 her attitude #ahfg
